Originally constructed in the 1950s, the Old Granada Television Studios on Quay Street, Manchester, has been sensitively repurposed to deliver Mollie’s Hotel, a design-led city-centre hospitality destination within the St John’s regeneration district. Mollie’s began as a roadside motel and this project sees the brand being reimagined for its very first city centre site, marking the start of its expansion. The scheme provides 128 hotel bedrooms and 19 different bedroom types alongside a ground- floor diner, bar, live music venue and flexible social and co-working spaces designed by Soho House Design and interpreted for construction by 3D Reid Architects.
The development restores and reintroduces the landmark site as an active, mixed-use destination, reinforcing its position within Manchester’s cultural and creative quarter. The project involved the retention and re-use of the existing structure, with selective demolition of internal elements and a new build plinth building to accommodate contemporary hotel layouts and amenities including workspace, gym, diner and bar with a live music venue. Retaining the original frame and façade preserves the architectural legacy of the studios while significantly reducing embodied carbon when compared to full demolition and rebuild.
